Before you leave the U.S., you should definitely let your bank know that you’re leaving the country. Once your bank is aware of your travel plans, they will put a note on your account; this prevents problems with identity theft, and ensures that you can use your card while abroad.

- Find out the international fee for your bank; for most banks there’s an additional 3% international fee added to every debit and credit card purchase
- Ask your bank for their international customer service number
- Check to see if your bank has an international branch to avoid extra fees
